Truth About George Clooney Running For President

George Clooney is not running for president, despite countless tabloid stories claiming otherwise. Gossip Cop has debunked many phony takes on the subject. Here are a few wrong rumors about the actor supposedly making a bid for the White House.

Just last month, Gossip Cop busted Woman’s Day for wrongly reporting that Barack Obama was pushing Clooney to run for president in 2020. The article emerged after the former president visited the movie star and his wife Amal at their Lake Como home. The get-together inspired the magazine to concoct a story about Obama persuading the actor to challenge Donald Trump in the next election.

However, Clooney has been saying for years that he never intends to run for president. In a 2017 interview with Variety, the actor made it clear he doesn’t believe celebrities should run for president. Clooney explained that instead of having “someone famous in office,” he’d rather see “someone who knows how to make policy.” Obama didn’t attempt to change his mind on the matter.

In April, Gossip Cop called out Star for falsely claiming Clooney and his wife Amal were headed for a divorce, all amid the actor running for president and the human rights lawyer being pregnant. The outlet further contended that Amal wasn’t supportive of her husband’s presidential run. Not a single aspect of the story was true. In addition to the spouses remaining happily married, both have stated they’re done having kids.

As noted above, Clooney has been on the record about not wanting to sit in the Oval Office, but he was even more adamant about it in a 2015 press conference. “I’ve been asked that for almost 20 years now and the answer is just, no,” the actor stated when asked if he had any political aspirations. “Who would ever want to live like that?” Clooney further noted he has “no interest” in being a politician but “every interest in being involved from the outside and trying to get things done that are important to me.”

Last year, Gossip Cop debunked a HollywoodLife story about Clooney’s celebrity friends wanting him to run for president. The blog maintained that famous pals such as Julia Roberts were trying to convince the actor to make a bid for the presidency, and spoke to him about it at his AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony. What the website didn’t realize is that Roberts was forced to miss the ceremony due to a work-related scheduling conflict. The premise was simply fabricated.

And finally, Woman’s Day swore last year that Clooney would be running for president in the 2020 election in an effort to change the country’s gun laws. The story was published after the actor and his wife donated $500,000 to the “March for Our Lives” demonstration organized by the survivors of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. But just because Clooney donated to a worthy cause, it didn’t mean he was campaigning for office. Although the actor is dedicated to several different causes, he doesn’t need to be sitting inside the White House to lend his support, and doesn’t have any intention of becoming the next president.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
