“We started out pretty nervous,” said Chatham Charter head coach Jennifer Bridges. “We knew kinda what was riding on tonight’s game. In the end, we got them (River Mill Academy) in foul trouble and that’s where we need to be … They played as hard as they could; they played their hearts out. That’s all I can ask for and they did.”
River Mill Academy held a slight 8-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter behind five points from junior MiRonda Swepson.
Chatham Charter left a ton of points at the free throw line in the opening stanza. The Knights just went 1-for-7 from the stripe in the first.
Chatham Charter would respond from its sluggish start by outscoring River Mill Academy by eight (19-11) in the second quarter.
With River Mill Academy struggling with foul trouble, junior Morgan Lineberry was able to take control of the game down low in the second quarter for the visiting Knights.
Lineberry tallied a quarter-high of nine points to help Chatham Charter carry a 26-19 lead into intermission.
River Mill Academy came out in the second half riding the momentum of two of its juniors — Kyleigha Lofton and Trinity French.
Lofton (six) and French (five) were responsible for all 11 of the Jaguars’ points in the third quarter, but Chatham Charter was still up (31-30) going into the final stanza despite posting just five points in the third.
Chatham Charter’s Rebecca McGaughna began to get into a rhythm in the fourth quarter. The junior forward scored six of her nine second half points in the quarter to help the Knights’ seal a much-needed road win in league play.
Point guard Tamaya Walden also played a key role in the Knights’ win on Tuesday. The freshman point guard hit three of her four free throw attempts down the stretch to help ice the game.
With the loss, River Mill Academy saw its three-game winning streak come to a close. The Jaguars had won seven of their last eight coming into Tuesday’s contest.
McGaughnea (16) and Lineberry (14) combined for 30 points to lead the Knights. Loftin paced the Jaguars with 14 points.
Chatham Charter (11-2, 5-0 Central Tar Heel) is set to welcome Raleigh Charter to Siler City on Friday night.
River Mill Academy (8-6, 4-1 Central Tar Heel) hopes to start a new win streak on Friday when it hosts Cornerstone Charter Academy.
