A 23-race national event tour – with a return to Heartland Park Topeka pending – constitutes the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
NHRA officials currently are talking with the new ownership group at Heartland Park Topeka, and a 24th race could be added to the 2016 schedule pending the outcome of those discussions. The 27th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals were contested at HTP over the Memorial Day weekend last May.

Teams in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock will contest the 23-race schedule. The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will compete in a 16-race schedule, including all six races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, the sanctioning body’s playoffs for the top-10 competitors in each pro class.
FOX Sports, through its national broadcast network and Fox Sports 1, will provide exclusive television coverage next season, replacing longtime partners ESPN and ESPN2. Fox Sports is planning live coverage of as many as 18 events, including qualifying rounds Saturday and eliminations Sunday.
The season again will open and close at famed Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. The season kicks off at Pomona with the Circle K NHRA Winternationals, Feb. 11-14, and will close at the historic drag strip with the Auto Club NHRA Finals, Nov. 10-13.
NHRA’s Western Swing will return with the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at scenic Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., near Denver, July 22-24. From there, teams will trek to Northern California for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals (July 29-31) at Sonoma Raceway before finishing in Kent, Wash., near Seattle, at Pacific Raceways with the NHRA Northwest Nationals, Aug. 5-7.
The last race in the regular season, during which final positions for the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship can be secured, will be the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, in Brownsburg, Ind., over Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 5.
NHRA’s playoffs, the six-race Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, will begin in mid-September with three consecutive weeks of racing: the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., (Sept. 16-18); the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park at Madison, Ill., near St. Louis (Sept. 23-25) and the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., (Sept. 29-Oct. 2).
The AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, near Dallas, (Oct. 13-16) will set the stage for the final two Countdown races. The season will conclude with the NHRA Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas (Oct. 27-30) and the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, where world champions will be crowned, Nov. 10-13.

“I’m excited to see writers like Jim Pedley, John Sturbin, Rick Minter, and Bill Fleischman, guys who have written about me, working together at www.floorballcoach.org. The internet is huge and it is giving talented guys like these professionals a place to get their stories out to our fans and the public. The media is changing and I am excited to see writers that have covered me and all of motorsports creating a new way to get our stories to our fans. They can take motorsports journalism to the next level. I’ve dealt with these guys for over 15 years all across the country.”
“As an example of the character of these guys, when Sturbin was with the Ft. Worth Star Telegram and I was racing at the Texas Motorplex, one of my favorite tracks he showed how he is an individual who gets it. He understands the sport and the drivers. Years ago I ran my mouth at the Texas Motorplex saying I was going to go out and set a record and if I didn’t I would eat his newspaper column. Well I didn’t set the record so I went into the press room and ate his column the next day. He told before I started that I didn’t have to follow through but I told him if I say something I am going to back it up whether I win or lose. That is the kind of pro Sturbin is as well as the rest of the writers at floorballcoach.org are. They will write the truth whether you like it or not.”
“You better not blame something on your car because Sturbin will dig and find out whether or not it was the car or you. He gets down in the trenches, tells the truth, and he knows what he is talking about. I am excited for these writers and this new website because I have always loved the media and I know that without the media you don’t have much. You have to be able to tell your story and get it right. These guys are guys who will make sure they get it right.” – JOHN FORCE
