Miley Cyrus did not go back to acting “raunchy,” despite a report from exactly one year ago today. Gossip Cop shot down the claim back then, with an insider assuring us it was untrue. Now 12 months later, it’s clear a tabloid’s story alleging Cyrus would return to being “naughty” was made-up and wrong.
On October 21, 2017, the National Enquirer asserted Cyrus was going to revert back to her wild child ways because her then current, relatively sanitized album, Younger Now, wasn’t a success. The supermarket tabloid predicted a year ago that fans should be prepared for “naughty Miley’s return.” To lend credence to its fabricated tale, the magazine quoted a supposed source as saying, “Expect the return of raunchy Cyrus really soon” since her cleaner “Hannah Montana” image was “not working” again.
Gossip Cop is not exactly sure how the tabloid defines “really soon,” but a full 365 days have passed, and Cyrus has not exhibited any type of behavior that could be construed as truly “raunchy” or “naughty” in the past year. In fact, the singer has mostly withdrawn from public view. In July, Cyrus deleted all her Instagram photos, and has she updated her Twitter since then. The most risque she’s gotten is when Cyrus posted a photo of herself on Twitter, wearing a red, white, and blue bikini on the Fourth of July. That’s hardly “naughty.”
It seems the magazine or its alleged “source” felt that, with the failure of Younger Me, Cyrus’ knee-jerk response would be to go back to the formula from her 2013 album Bangerz, which featured “Wrecking Ball” and its not family-friendly video. But, as Cyrus noted while promoting Younger Now in 2017, her more outlandish behavior from the past “doesn’t reflect who I am now.” And in the intervening year since the Enquirer maintained Cyrus would return to being “naughty” and acting “raunchy,” she has remained even keeled.
Of course, Gossip Cop is not entirely surprised the false report about Cyrus has not held up a year later, considering the tabloid continued to publish untrue articles about the singer. Just a couple of months ago, for example, Gossip Cop posted a fact-check after that magazine contended Cyrus and fiance Liam Hemsworth had split up because of her “wild ways.” As noted, she didn’t return to her bad behavior, and more significantly the engaged couple didn’t breakup. Almost comically, right when the outlet published its tale, Hemsworth posted a photo on Instagram of him and Cyrus walking a dog together.
Occasionally, Gossip Cop looks back at stories from a year ago not to pat ourselves on the back for being right, but rather to point out to readers how certain outlets aren’t reliable. Revisiting busts from the past offers a perspective in which one can see whether or not a report was true or false over time. In this instance, a tabloid contended Cyrus was going back to her “raunchy” ways, but it appears it was just the magazine making the claim that was bad.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
