Given the high transmission of COVID-19 in Albany County, the district is returning to a universal indoor masking policy for all faculty, staff, students, visitors and vendors beginning Monday, August 16. Appropriate face masks (masks that are at least two-ply, fit snugly and cover both the nose and mouth) must be worn at all times in all buildings, regardless of vaccination status or whether students are present in the building. This change reflects the recommendations of the CDC both for schools and for all indoor public settings in areas of substantial or high transmission. Physical distancing of at least three feet must be maintained. For unvaccinated adults, distancing of at least six feet must be maintained. More information here.

Athletic Placement Process

The intent of the Athletic Placement Process (formerly Selection Classification) is to provide for students in grades 7 through 12 a mechanism allowing them to participate safely at an appropriate level of competition based upon readiness rather than age and grade. Students do not mature at the same rate and there can be a tremendous range of developmental differences between students of the same age. The program is not to be used to fill positions on teams, provide additional experience, provide a place for junior high students when no modified program is offered, or reward a student. Instead, it is aimed at the few select students who can benefit from such placement because of their level of readiness. It will also be fairer to other students on the modified teams. This State Education program extends the high school eligibility of middle school students who are qualified.

A Board of Education may permit pupils in grades no lower than seventh to compete on any senior high school team, or permit senior high pupils to compete on any teams in grades no lower than seventh, provided the pupils are placed at levels of competition appropriate to their physiological maturity, physical fitness and skills in relationship to other pupils on those teams in accordance with standards established by the NYS Commissioner of Education – Commissioner’s Regulation Section 135.4 (c)(7)(ii)(a)(4). To learn more about the APP, follow the links below or contact the Director of Athletics, Len Kies, at (518) 439-4921 ext. 22113.

Concussion Management Policies, Protocols and Resources

Visit the Bethlehem Central Board of Education’s policies page for concussion policies and protocols.

Concussion Management and Awareness Information:

On July 1, 2012, New York State enacted the Concussion Management and Awareness Act. The Commissioner of Education worked with the Commissioner of Health to produce guidelines for school districts to follow in protecting the health and well-being of concussed students. The Bethlehem Central School District has responded to the New York State Concussion Management and Awareness Act by developing a district-wide Concussion Management Protocol. This Protocol outlines procedures for district staff, parents, and students to follow in managing head injuries; as well as guidance in returning to activities following a concussion. The goals of Bethlehem’s concussion management include:

Education regarding head injuries and concussionPrompt emergency response to head injuriesAppropriate medical follow-upReturn to play/activities guidance

The law specifies that coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers and school nurses receive state approved biennial training regarding concussion awareness and management. Bethlehem Central also believes that it is important for parents and students to also have access to head injury and concussion materials.
